Studio story

One room, two wheels, a kiln named Doris.

Clay Atelier began in a rented garage with a second-hand wheel and a lot of cracked mugs. Ten years on we still work in the same spirit: small batches, honest glazes, and nothing made to a deadline the clay did not agree to.

Every piece carries a thumb mark where it was lifted from the wheel. We think that is the signature that matters.

Wedge

Air is pressed out of the clay so it throws evenly and fires safely.

Throw

Shaped on the wheel, then left to firm up to leather hard.

Trim and glaze

Feet are trimmed, then each piece is dipped or brushed by hand.

Fire

Two firings, the second to about 1,260 degrees, cooled over a full day.
